Women, Infants and Children Program (WIC)

The WIC Program is a nutrition, education and supplemental food program funded by the US Department of Agriculture and operated by The NH Bureau of WIC Nutrition Services. WIC provides free nutrition and consumer counseling, health screening and tailored food packages to persons who are determined to be at medical or nutritional risk due to inadequate nutrition and/or income. program participants are issued vouchers that can be used to purchase specific food items that are approved for their nutritional content.

The WIC Program also provides breastfeeding support through the use of peer counselors who are experienced breastfeeding mothers.

In addition to nutrition education and vouchers, the program provides information and referrals to many local social service agencies in Cheshire and Sullivan counties.

WIC has clinic appointments available in Keene, Winchester, Hinsdale & Jaffrey, as well as Claremont, Newport & Charlestown.  WIC offers evening appointments in both Claremont and Keene in order to meet the needs of working families.

Emergency Food Assistance Program (EFAP)

SCS distributes USDA surplus commodity foods to emergency feeding organizations (soup kitchens, food pantries, homeless shelters and charitable food institutions) through out Cheshire and Sullivan counties. Four deliveries per year consisting of 9-18 food items. Clients can pick up food at any of the emergency food organizations. Emergency food organizations served by EFAP are

Farmer's Market Nutrition Program

WIC and CSFP participants will be given coupons to use at area Farmers" Markets to purchase fresh vegetables and fruit. Coupons are issued at no cost to participants, and may be used in place of cash at the markets.

 

Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)

Administered by the WIC program, Commodity Supplemental Food Program provides nutritious foods to families with infants between the ages of 6 and 12 months, and children from the ages of 5 to 6.  Also, elderly persons over the age of 60 can qualify for this program. Food boxes are available at bi-monthly distribution sites in the following towns:  Keene, Claremont, Newport, Charlestown, Jaffrey, Troy, Hinsdale and Winchester.
